MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

There is a brand of leadership which produces meta- leaders. These meta- leaders are those whose commitment and passions inspires all others in the team. Such leaders don’t shy away from being the centre of attention, even if they don’t deliberately seek the same. They are also the kind of leaders one wishes to work under during crises situations. This is because they can generate business innovations where none apparently existed. The “you’re it” moment can come at any given time. Leaders who have experienced this moment, grow their influence beyond merely their formal authority. There are three broad dimensions to meta- leadership. One is the leader himself or herself. Another is the situation, with the third being connectivity. One can only emerge as a meta- leader when the person has led amidst such complexity.

This project is jointly run by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and McKinsey, which of course is a global management consulting leader. The organizations identified as lighthouses are those that are driving the ongoing Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). These companies often have common work areas such as the collaboration between UPS and Fast Radius, already functional. The new lot in addition to those identified earlier, together are driving the paradigm shift in marketing. They need to ensure that they do not get sucked in to what is called the “Pilot Purgatory”, which is a situation of a pilot study from where 4IR firms cannot scale up.

Due to the changing discourse on leadership taking place worldwide, there is now a need for those that display constant curiosity. Companies require nurturing over a period of time. Curious leaders are them who are constantly on the lookout for game- changing innovations. Larry Fink, who was the Founder of Black Rock had a specific talent management strategy, where he wanted people close to himself, who would constantly seek to learn. Likewise, Alan Mulally who saved Ford from obscurity, had a penchant for identifying those curiosity- inducing behaviors. Specific management training programmes are held to develop such curious leaders. It has been proven that such curiosity can be developed, even if one is not born with the same trait.
