MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

The most successful of people, and likewise powerful leaders tend to work differently from the rest. Commonly, they all seem to have an insane work ethic. Apple’s employees can testify to having received emails from 4:30 am onwards form the company CEO Tim Cook. The owner of the Dallas Mavericks meanwhile shunned any vacation for seven years, while he was busy setting up his first business. Mary Barra may now be number one at GM, but it took her 33 years of work at the company to scale those heights. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is known for his long shifts, sans holidays during the early days of Amazon. Now he directly speaks to affected customers, in order to gauge authentic business intelligence. The CEO of Renault and Nissan Carlos Ghosn covers an immense lot of miles each year to get the global business on track. Other leaders such as Michael Jordan, Sheryl Sandberg, Li Ka-Shing, Sir Martin Sorrell, Marissa Mayer, Jeffrey Immelt, Kobe Bryant, Indra Nooyi, Vince McMahon and Elon Musk have all been part of such incredible stories of work ethic.

A recent book has been written by Vijay Govindarajan and Ravi Ramamurti titled Reverse Innovation in Healthcare. It touches upon several important topics such as the spiraling costs of healthcare in the US. Health insurance premiums are one of the highest in the world in the US, but in terms of benefits, it ranks 37th in the world, as per business intelligence supplied by the WEF (World Economic Forum). The solutions to USA’s problems will come from adoption of practices from India, as argued by the writers, themselves of Indian origin. This is because, though India fares poorly on the same index where USA is 37th, the challenges are phenomenal due to lower affordability rates. Narayana Health is one example of such practices being adopted, such as a driving purpose towards good. Such organizations need to have a hub-and-spoke model to provide maximum benefits. The use of technology needs to be ramped up enthusiastically. An ultra-cost-consciousness pervades such places. Focus is made on a continuous process improvement and task shifting.

Different CEOs come up their own unique ways to drive success. Questions are one common path adopted by many. The leaders of Patagonia for example asked what they could do to make copying them a near-impossible task. At Salesforce, the founder was keen on understanding whether it was possible for any firm to sell enterprise software in a way that Amazon was doing with books. The CEO of Pixar very well understood that no business innovation, however unique could ever withstand the forces of isolation present at all levels. So, he wanted to understand how he could fight this situation. The world-famous business personality Elon Musk has a different take on the existing reality. He instead feels that such realities must always be challenged. This is what provoked him to develop his paradigm-defying innovations.
